Property Description
Perched atop Water Tower Hill, one of the highest elevations in Gladewater, Texas, this stately residence has a grand story to tell through its past tenants and their stories of riches, humbleness, and generosities. Originally, this residence at 314 North Main Street in Gladewater, Texas was owned by Lebanonese immigrant Mary Manziel, wife to Joseph Manziel and the mother of Bobby Joe Manziel. It is during this family’s tenure that it also became associated with Manziel Oil Company. Son, Bobby Joe was a bantam-weight boxer and friend to famed boxing sport-icon Jack Dempsey. After hitting pay dirt in south Gladewater, the Manziel Family moved to Tyler, Texas, first forging friendships with Dr. Bain Leake, Sr. and wife, Pearl Leake and with Gladewater native John Ben Shepherd. Dr. Leake and Mrs. Pearl invested in Gladewater and purchased the residence to establish a new hospital for the thriving and oil prosperous Gladewater. His clinic and laboratory office were located next door. Later in 1955, Dr. and Mrs. Leake made this their homestead. After both their deaths, the residence was transferred by Probate to Gwen Walker, a family friend. In April 1991, the residence was sold to Maxine Roberta Stein, the current owner of the property. She has prided her tenure in maintaining the beautiful garden venues and landscaping features credited to Mrs. Pearl Leake. The east garden area is the final resting place of Mrs. Leake’s favorite pet adorned with grave marker and eternal gas flame. The Manziel-Leake-Stein residence definitely is culturally and historically endowed with a unique aura and mystic personae of Gladewater, Texas, both past and present.
